Universities in India - Courses and Admission Procedure

Universities in India are hub of Higher Education. After 10+2 every student want to be a part of some big university and give his/her career a boost from the very beginning. There are dozens of universities in every state of India. But those who care about better education, they don't care if a university is in their own state or other. They care about reputation of that university in India and abroad. Here we will give a brief description of admission and courses in Universities. But before that lets discuss Universities.

Types of Universities



  • Central Universities: These are those universities which are directly under Central Government. Chancellor of Central Universities is President of India. Currently there are 46 Central Universities in India.
  • State Universities: These Universities are under State Government. Chancellor of State Universities is Governor of that state. There are 345 state Universities listed by UGC.
  • Deemed Universities: Deemed University is a status of Autonomy granted by Department of Higher Education on advice of UGC. There are 123 Deemed Universities in India. 
  • Private Universities: These universities are approved by UGC. Private Universities can't have affiliated colleges. There are 235 Private Universities in India.



Types of Courses in Indian Universities


There are almost every type of course available in Indian Universities that makes them famous around the world. Types of Courses in Indian Universities are

  • Regular Courses: In these courses you have to attend the college on regular basis and then appear in Exam either on semester basis or year basis. Graduate Courses, PG Diploma Couses and PG courses are mostly used regular courses.
  • Distance Education Courses: Distance Education (Correspondence) Courses are designed for those candidates who can't attend the class as they have some other work or Job to do. In such courses the candidate just need to attend just 10 to 15 day classes in a year. There are some universities which has specialized in distance education only.
  • Private Courses: Some universities also provide private courses. In these courses there is no need to attend any class. You just need to appear in Exam at the end of the year.
  • Professional Courses: From last 10 to 15 years the trend of professional courses is growing rapidly. These courses are especially designed with the concept to make the student ready for job in a particular field. Some examples of such courses are BCA, BBA, MCA, MBA.



Admission Procedure in Different Universities of India



Admission Procedure in different Universities depend on the number of candidates applying and its technological advancement. However most of the universities have their own official website, but some of them are not completely functional. Some common admission procedure of different universities is as follows.
  • Completely Offline Application: In such case you have to purchase the prospectus from a counter and then submit the duly filled application with all necessary documents. Then selected candidates are called for admission.
  • Online Admission: In such a case, you have to submit the application form and fees with the help of the official website of University. Rest of the process remains same.
  • Through Entrance Exam: For some courses the demand is very high among students, so universities organize entrance exams. Then selected candidates (on basis of merit list) get admission. All famous universities conduct entrance exams for most of the regular courses.
  • Through Cutoff List: Cutoff list is prepared on the basis of maks obtained in the qualifying exam. Only the top performers get chance to get admission.
  • Counsellings: Universities conduct counsellings, so that selected candidates can choose the college of their choice. Those who grab a higher rank in merit list have a better chance to get seat in college of their preference.

  • The Kurukshetra University was established in 1956 as a unitary residential University and its foundation stone was laid by late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.

Admission Procedure in Kendriya Vidyalaya 2016-2017

Kendriya Vidyalayas are considered as a quality schools which provide good quality education. In short they are known as KV. "Central School" term is also used for them. These schools are affiliated to CBSE Board. Kendriya Vidyalayas are specially made for wards of Defence Personnel as they face a number of transfers and studies of their children are affected a lot due to changing of school in middle of a term.

Admission Procedure in Kendriya Vidyalaya 2016-2017


Kendriya Vidyalaya are basically meant for children of defence personnel, but if seats are left vacant then other students can also get admission. There is a difference in admission procedure of these students. We will provide admission procedure for both types of students.

Priority in Admission Procedure in Kendriya Vidyalaya


As we have told your earlier that priority is given to children of defence personnel. But there is a priority structure which we have provided below. Students which fall first in this priority order will get preference in admissions.

  1. Children of transferable central government employees including ex-servicemen. 
  2. Children of non-transferable central government employees including ex-servicemen. 
  3. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of Autonomous bodies/Public sector undertaking/Institute of Higher learning of the Government of India. 
  4. Children of transferable state government employees. 
  5. Children of non-transferable employees of state government. 
  6. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of autonomous bodies/ Public Sector Undertakings/Institute of Higher learning of the State Governments.
  7. Children from any other category.

Admission Procedure in Kendriya Vidyalaya for Wards of Defence Personnel


If Wards of Defence Personnel are going to be admitted in class 1 then is just a simple interview. If they clear that they get a direct admission. There is a lottery system if number of applicants are more than number of seats available. But if they want admission in a higher class then they should provide a TC (Transfer Certificate) issued by their previous Kendriya Vidyalaya. Lottery system is also applicable for students of class 2 to 8. Right to Education (RTE) is also applicable for students from class 1 to 8. Those students who have a TC can easily get admission in middle of a term. As Kendriya Vidyalayas are specially established for wards of defence personnel so they get this priority. For class 9th there is an admission test (or Entrance Test).

There a admission test or lottery system for other students who want to get admission in Kendriya Vidyalaya. These seats are only provided to other students only if these seats are vacant after admissions of wards of defence personnel.

Documents required with Admission Form



  1. Age proof: It is required for admission in class I. Birth certificate issued by municipal corporation or village panchayat can be used as a proof of age.
  2. Transfer Certificate: For students seeking admission in class 2 onwards may need a transfer certificate issued by the previous kendriya vidyalaya.
  3. Transfer Proof:  Father of the student need to submit a certificate issued by their office to show number of transfers during past seven years.
  4. Proof of Residence: Students other than wards of defence personnel need to submit their proof of residence.


If the number of students applying for a class is higher than number of seats then there is lottery system to select the students for admission. Lottery system is applicable only upto class VIII. There is an entrance test for admission in class IX.

Mizoram University is a thriving academic community with its lush green scenic hills, located at Tanhril in the western outskirts of Aizwal city. The university was awarded a “Grade A” by the Mizoram State Pollution Control Board. It is an eco- friendly university and is one of the first universities in the country to run effectively on solar power system.
